For sweet potato fries (on the grill or in the oven), the secret is in the spice… and the prep.  Follow these steps for perfectly tender and YUM-worthy fries, every time.  I’m doing these on a very hot grill, but if you’re baking on a sheet pan in the oven, keep it between 400-425 degrees for crispy edges.

Ingredients

  • 6-7
sweet potatoes (sometimes mistakenly referred to as "yams")
  • 2 Teaspoons
    garlic powder
  • 2 Teaspoons
    onion powder
  • 2 Teaspoons
    cayenne pepper
  • 2 Teaspoons
    paprika
  • 2 Teaspoons
    cinnamon
  • 2 Teaspoons
    salt
  • 2 Tablespoons
    brown sugar
  • 7-8 Tablespoons
    olive or avocado oil

Instructions

  1. Mix the brown sugar, salt and spices together in a small bowl. Set aside.

  2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cut sweet potatoes in half, longwise, and drop them into boiling water for about 10 minutes. You may need to work in two batches, depending on the size of your pot.

  3. Remove potatoes and allow to cool, then cut them into "fries," and toss in oil.

  4. Toss the spice mixture into the bowl with the "fries" to coat evenly. Spread fries onto grill pan or sheet pan, and place on grill or in oven for about 15 minutes, until the edges are crispy. Toss on the pan for an even texture. Remove from heat and eat up!
